Professional Biography
Prof. M. N. Kaumal is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Colombo, where he has been actively engaged in teaching, research, and academic leadership since 2005. He earned his BSc in Chemistry with First Class Honours from the University of Colombo in 2004 and completed his PhD in Analytical Chemistry at Mississippi State University, USA, in 2012.
His research focuses on analytical method development and validation, with particular emphasis on the design and development of miniature and portable electrochemical sensors. His work addresses practical challenges in chemical analysis, sensor technology, and applied analytical systems.
In 2018, Prof. Kaumal further expanded his research-to-innovation expertise through postdoctoral training at Mass General Brigham Innovation (Harvard-affiliated) after being awarded the prestigious Technology Transfer Fellowship under the Commercial Law Development Program of the U.S. Department of Commerce. This experience strengthened his engagement with technology transfer, commercialization, and applied research impact.
Alongside his research career, Prof. Kaumal has completed extensive professional training in higher education teaching and intellectual property management. His qualifications include the Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (CTHE) from the University of Colombo, the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) program at Mississippi State University, and specialized programs conducted by KIPO, EUIPO, and WIPO. In 2020, he completed the WIPO–KIPO–KAIST–KIPA Advanced International Certificate Course (AICC) on IP Asset Management for Business Success, followed by the WIPO International Patent Drafting Program in 2024.
